Data recovery

Data recovery

You can perform data recovery using software-based methods for accidental deletion or minor corruption, built-in system tools like File History, or, for more severe issues, by connecting the drive to another computer to run recovery software or seeking professional data recovery for physical damage. Stop using the drive immediately to prevent overwriting lost data.

Method 1: Use data recovery software

  • Install software on a different drive: download and install a data recovery application (Recuva, EaseUS, Stellar Data Recovery) onto a different drive to avoid overwriting lost files.
  • Connect the affected drive to another computer, internally or externally.
  • Scan the drive using the recovery tool and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Recover files to a different drive — never save recovered files back to the original drive.

Method 2: Use built-in tools

  • Windows: use File History via “Restore your files with File History” in the search bar, then locate and restore the file from a previous backup.
  • Mac: use Time Machine to find and restore lost files directly from your backup.

Method 3: Handle physical damage

  • Assess the damage first — cracks, dents or unusual noises mean the drive needs professional attention.
  • Do not attempt DIY recovery on a physically damaged drive; further use can make data unrecoverable.
  • Bring the drive to our professional data recovery service for cleanroom-safe handling.
